Hey guys! I hope everyone had a great Memorial Day Weekend! I love this holiday where we are able to take a moment and remember those who have fought and died for our country.

And to also remember other loved ones who we have lost. This week was the one year anniversary of my best friend's passing.

May has turned into a whole month of remembering for me. Her birthday, her passing and Memorial Day all right together. Yesterday was a good day for me to reflect and spend time with my little family.
I do hope each of you enjoyed your weekend and time to remember your own loved ones!

First off, I want to announce this week's blog winners! Thank you to everyone who posted blog comments last week. I really do read them all! If you are one of our winners, email me your address {erinmadsen@diecutsinc.com} and I will get your prize right out to you!

Congrats to:

Super cute idea to make a mini album from the banner. TFS

AND

What a nice set to give to a teacher!

Today I have a fun tutorial to share with you. Do you remember seeing this display at our CHA booth?

The clown fish was a big hit with you! I love how the scales of the fish are punched out of paper and layered. It really does show off how great paper can look on things other than scrapbooks!

Here are your instructions!

Clown Fish

Supplies & Tools

·      DCWV 12”X12” SHIMMER STACK
·      DCWV 12”X12” GLITTER STACK
·      DCWV 12”X12” CAFÉ MEDITERRANEAN PRINTED CARDSTOCK STACK
·      12”X12” PIECE OF BLACK CARDSTOCK
·      BLUE MOON BEADS—BLACK STRING BEADS
·      BLUE MOON BEADS—RED STRING BEADS
·      2 MEDIUM BLACK BUTTONS
·      1”,1 1/4”, AND 2 1/2” CIRCLE PUNCH
·      BEADING WIRE (OPTIONAL)
·      SCISSORS
·      MASKING TAPE
·      TISSUE PAPER OR PACKING PAPER
·      PAPER CRAFTING ADHESIVE (INCLUDING HOT GLUE)
·      MARKER
·      PENCIL

 Directions

1.    CREATE FISH BASE USING PACKING PAPER AS THE SUBSTANCE, FORMING AND TAPING IT TOGETHER WITH MASKING TAPE. *NOTE: BE SURE TO INCLUDE THE TOP AND BOTTOM FINS AND TAIL IN YOUR BASE STRUCTURE.
2.    TAKE YOUR MARKER AND DRAW OUT THE FISH DESIGN (SECTIONS WHERE YOU WILL ADD CONTRASTING COLORS AND/OR PRINTS) ON THE FISH BASE.  THIS WILL HELP GUIDE THE PLACEMENT OF THE CIRCLES.  SET ASIDE.
3.    PUNCH OUT NUMEROUS CIRCLES USING THE 1” CIRCLE PUNCH FROM COORDINATING SHEETS IN THE SHIMMER, GLITTER, AND CAFÉ MEDITERRANEAN STACKS.  *NOTE: YOU WILL NEED 14 TO 20 CIRCLES TO COMPLETE EACH COLOR SECTION FOR AN APPROXIMATE TOTAL OF 250 CIRCLES.
4.    BEFORE ADHERING YOUR CIRCLES IN PLACE, COVER THE TOP AND BOTTOM FINS AS WELL AS THE TAIL WITH 1 SOLID COLOR ON EACH SIDE.  ONCE THESE ARE COVERED, BEGIN ADHERING YOUR CIRCLES (“SCALES”) IN PLACE USING YOUR LINES DRAWN IN STEP 2.
5.    PUNCH A 2 1/2” CIRCLE FROM DESIRED GLITTER SHEET.  CUT THIS IN HALF AND ADHERE 1 ON EACH SIDE OF THE FISH, WITH THE STRAIGHT EDGE UNDERNEATH THE SCALES IN FRONT OF WHERE YOU WILL ADHERE YOUR SIDE FINS.
6.    CUT OUT 2 SIDE FINS AND ADHERE THEM IN PLACE, 1 ON EACH SIDE, JUST UNDERNEATH THE 1/2 CIRCLES.
7.    ADD DETAILS TO THE FISH, BEGINNING WITH THE FINS.  TAKE THE RED SEED BEADS AND, USING THE IMAGE AS A REFERENCE, ADHERE THEM IN DESIRED PATTERN TO EACH SIDE OF THE TOP AND BOTTOM FINS AND TAIL.  ADHERE TO THE FRONT OF THE SIDE FINS AS WELL.  ADHERE THE BLACK SEED BEADS AROUND THE CONTOUR OF EACH FIN ON THE TOP AND BOTTOM OF THE FISH.  *NOTE: BEADS WILL BE MORE SECURE WHEN RESTRUNG ONTO A WIRE AND THEN ADDED TO THE FISH.
8.    WHEN THESE ARE FINISHED, PUNCH OUT CIRCLES FOR THE EYES.  YOU WILL NEED A 1” CIRCLE AND 1 1/4” CIRCLE FOR EACH ONE, WITH EACH SIZE IN A DIFFERENT COLOR.  ADHERE THESE IN PLACE, ADDING A BLACK BUTTON IN THE CENTER OF EACH GROUPING.
9.    FINISH BY ADDING LIPS TO THE FRONT OF THE FISH.  INSERT BLACK PAPER IN THE CENTER OF THE LIPS.
10. ENJOY!

Oh look at that cute little face :) Don't you want to make one of your own now!

Have a wonderful day! I'll be back on Thursday :)

It's FRIDAY! I love typing those letters :) And a holiday weekend at that. I'm so excited to have Monday off work and to be able to spend time with my little family. We have been SO busy with....the month of May. Why is May so crazy?! I will be using Monday for a recharge day. We all need those once in a while!

I want to remind you if you haven't already submitted your layouts and card ideas...come play with us for May's Stack-a-holic Challenge! You can get all of the details HERE. You have until May 30th to get your entries to me. I can't wait to see them!

I am hoping to inspire you on some things that you can do with our Decorative Trim Peel & Stick! These are available at Jo-Anns Stores and come in a variety of patterns and sizes. They feel and act a lot like a typical contact paper, except our patterns are way cooler than the average paper :) I will show you how I used this roll on a project in a minute....

You can use the decorative trim to jazz up your ceiling fan blades...

Cover your filing cabinet....

Line your stairs...

Update an old dresser...

Give your refrigerator a makeover...

Or give your bookshelf a new life! That is what I did with the roll that I showed you earlier....

This was SOO easy and I love how it turned out! I just measured the back of my bookshelf and cut my paper to match.

Peeled the backing off and slapped it on! This stuff is very forgiving...if you make a mistake it comes right off. I know this from experience, okay?!

Didn't it turn out cute?? You will have to check out your local Jo-Anns & see all of the cute patterns that we have! There is something for everyone's style and taste.

Have a fabulous weekend, my friends!! Monday is my free day but I will be back on Tuesday with more great ideas straight from your favorite paper company :)

Hello! Thanks for stopping by the blog today! I think you are going to like today's post. I have been waiting to share it with you guys!

Last month I went to Dallas to film some special webisodes for Michaels.com and National Scrapbook Month. I love going down there and hanging out with my Michaels friends. They are a blast to be with :) I wanted to send you the links so you could see the projects that I shared. I love them both and for sure plan on making more of these for my own personal use and gifts.

Click HERE to watch the video of me & Jo showing you how to make a very fun birthday banner which is later turned into a mini book. This project uses the very popular, Snapshot Stack.

And click HERE to watch the video where we show how to make a really neat 3D Family Tree in a shadow box. This would be so great to give as a gift! We used the Garden Tea Party Stack to create this project.

HERE is a link to see all of the webisodes that were made for National Scrapbooking Month. I have watched them all and love all of the ideas! If you want to see some really cute kids and puppy along with a fun bracelet idea, watch the once called "Photo Bracelet"! I need to steal that from the office next time I am there :)

Enjoy!! I'll see you again on Friday!

Welcome back to the DCWV Diary! I hope you had a great weekend. Ours was busy but really good. The weather was beautiful, we got to spend time with lots of friends and got plenty done on our "to do list" around the house. Can't complain about that kind of weekend! This week is the last week of school around here! I am so happy...no early morning alarm clocks, no more packing lunches and plenty of pool days! It's so close I can taste it!

I want to announce our 2 winners from last week's blog comments! I loved reading all of them, especially the Steampunk replies! I am so glad that my little explanation helped some of you understand the trend a little more. Winners: email me at erinmadsen@diecutsinc.com and I will get your stacks right to you!

Congrats to:

Love the vintage/futuristic vibe :)

Very cute little guy! Why does his teacher look familiar? Love the cups. Lucky teachers. TFS Hugs, Jess

I have another great idea that you can use for a teacher "thank you" gift for the end of the year. I know not everyone does this, but we do and I think it finishes off the school year on the right note.

I love this mini chalkboard & pencil cup set! It uses the Grade School Stack which is perfect for any kind of teacher or school gift. Here are the instructions on how to make and what you will need.

·      CLEAR PLASTIC PENCIL HOLDER CUP
·      PAPERCLIPS
·      CHALK
·      SCISSORS
·      PAPER TRIMMER
·      PAPER CRAFTING ADHESIVE

1.    SELECT AND CUT CORRESPONDING PRINTS TO COVER THE UNFINISHED EDGE OF THE FRAMED CHALKBOARD.  ADHERE PRINTS IN PLACE.
2.    TIE A BOW USING THE BLACK RIBBON WITH WHITE POLKA DOTS AND THE SCHOOL-THEMED RIBBON.  ADHERE THIS TO TOP RIGHT CORNER OF THE FRAME.

3.    EMBELLISH CUP BY CUTTING OUT AN IMAGE FROM PAPER.  ATTACH THIS TO THE CENTER OF THE KNOT WITH A PAPERCLIP AND AN ADDITIONAL SECTION OF RIBBON.

Have a wonderful week as summer totally teases us! I'll see you back here on Wednesday!

Trend Watch: Steampunk

Oh I have been so excited to do this blogpost!! Now promise me you will leave me a comment (to get entered in the giveaway) and tell me what you think of this trend!

So a few months ago, I happened to watch a random documentary on some random channel about the world of Steampunk. It explained the trend which revolves around an old school science fiction genre. People get really into it and get dressed up and go to events. There really is a whole Steampunk world out there for their fans! THEN, one of these times when I posted on Facebook asking what kind of stacks you wanted to see---people kept saying "Steampunk!" So I talked to my girl, D, who is in charge of all artwork that comes out of DCWV and asked her about the trend. Well, she pulled out the cutest stack and said, "Guess what's coming out in July!" They already knew the trend, had it designed and on the calendar to be released. (Keep reading for a few teasers from the stack!)

So that leads us to...What is steampunk?

This is a good question that is difficult to answer.
Steampunk has always been first and foremost a literary genre, or least a subgenre of science fiction and fantasy that includes social or technological aspects of the 19th century (the steam) usually with some deconstruction of, re imagining of, or rebellion against parts of it (the punk). Unfortunately, it is a poorly defined sub genre, with plenty of disagreement about what is and is not included. For example, steampunk stories may:
  • 1. Take place in the Victorian era but include advanced machines based on 19th century technology
  • 2. Include the supernatural as well
  • 3. Include the advanced machines, but take place later than the Victorian period, thereby assuming   that the predomination by electricity and petroleum never happens.
  • 4. Take place in an another world altogether, but featuring Victorian-like technology

(Taken from www.steampunk.com)

You need to see some pictures to really catch the vibe!! Here is a pic I found of some people dressed up at a Steampunk Event. They go on all around the word. They coordinate through social media and the Internet. Fascinating!!

.

Steampunk is turning up all over the place! Here is the cover of the new John Mayer album.

Even Hello Kitty can dress up in her Steampunk costume!

Gears, clocks, ravens

Masks, iron

Mixing textures and themes

Keys, copper

cameras

These are some of the icons that show up the most in Steampunk world. I think watching the show on TV really fascinated me with the trend! I love seeing people be creative and happy and the people into Steampunk look like they are having a blast :)

Here are a couple peeks at our new Steampunk Stack which is coming out the begining of July. It has a cool name which I am not sharing yet and I can't tell you what stores it will be in. You will have to wait! But as always, we pull through in giving you amazing prints and quality in stacks that you can hoard and hoard and CREATE with :) hee hee!

PLEASE leave me a comment and let me know what you know about the Steampunk world and what you think of it!! I will pick some stack winners on Monday :) Have a fabulous weekend!!
