Oh I have been so excited to do this blogpost!! Now promise me you will leave me a comment (to get entered in the giveaway) and tell me what you think of this trend!
So a few months ago, I happened to watch a random documentary on some random channel about the world of Steampunk. It explained the trend which revolves around an old school science fiction genre. People get really into it and get dressed up and go to events. There really is a whole Steampunk world out there for their fans! THEN, one of these times when I posted on Facebook asking what kind of stacks you wanted to see---people kept saying "Steampunk!" So I talked to my girl, D, who is in charge of all artwork that comes out of DCWV and asked her about the trend. Well, she pulled out the cutest stack and said, "Guess what's coming out in July!" They already knew the trend, had it designed and on the calendar to be released. (Keep reading for a few teasers from the stack!)
So that leads us to...What is steampunk?
This is a good question that is difficult to answer.
Steampunk has always been first and foremost a literary genre, or least a subgenre of science fiction and fantasy that includes social or technological aspects of the 19th century (the steam) usually with some deconstruction of, re imagining of, or rebellion against parts of it (the punk). Unfortunately, it is a poorly defined sub genre, with plenty of disagreement about what is and is not included. For example, steampunk stories may:
- 1. Take place in the Victorian era but include advanced machines based on 19th century technology
- 2. Include the supernatural as well
- 3. Include the advanced machines, but take place later than the Victorian period, thereby assuming that the predomination by electricity and petroleum never happens.
- 4. Take place in an another world altogether, but featuring Victorian-like technology
(Taken from www.steampunk.com)
You need to see some pictures to really catch the vibe!! Here is a pic I found of some people dressed up at a Steampunk Event. They go on all around the word. They coordinate through social media and the Internet. Fascinating!!
Steampunk is turning up all over the place! Here is the cover of the new John Mayer album.
Even Hello Kitty can dress up in her Steampunk costume!
Gears, clocks, ravens
Masks, iron
Mixing textures and themes
Keys, copper
cameras
These are some of the icons that show up the most in Steampunk world. I think watching the show on TV really fascinated me with the trend! I love seeing people be creative and happy and the people into Steampunk look like they are having a blast :)
Here are a couple peeks at our new Steampunk Stack which is coming out the begining of July. It has a cool name which I am not sharing yet and I can't tell you what stores it will be in. You will have to wait! But as always, we pull through in giving you amazing prints and quality in stacks that you can hoard and hoard and CREATE with :) hee hee!
PLEASE leave me a comment and let me know what you know about the Steampunk world and what you think of it!! I will pick some stack winners on Monday :) Have a fabulous weekend!!

ReplyDeleteWow...fun, different and definitely like!
ReplyDeleteI know nothing about it but it looks pretty cool!
ReplyDeleteOh this stack looks really cool!
ReplyDeleteSteampunk itself isn't my style, but there are definitely parts/pieces of it that I like and would incoporate into my crafting. I often find it a little too busy/ornate for me, but many of the design elements and images are wonderful and are great for a more CAS vintage feel.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see the whole collection!!
ReplyDeleteIm a STEAMPUNK FREAK ....I make everything I can with gears and levers ! To me its an easy going style that has no rules :) hope you keep on with your ideas for paper .:)
ReplyDeleteIt's been said that "steampunk is what happens when goths discover brown." As a goth girl who moonlights as a steampunker, this is definitely true! My last birthday party was even titled "the steampunk masquerade"!
ReplyDeleteI think it goes without saying that I'm pretty stoked for this stack to come out!
I really am excited to see all of the new releases! I personally don't know a lot about steampunk and have not crafted in that aspect, but am always looking at new ways to be creative!

ReplyDeleteI adore Steampunk!! I've done some Chunky ATB's in the steampunk theme, lots of fun!
ReplyDeleteCan hardly wait for this to come out...as almost everyone else says I LOVE Steampunk. It makes me think of watches, cameras, small gears that make things work and copper. I would so love winning this awesome prize.

ReplyDeleteI am wicked excited that DCWV has picked up this trend! Your paper lines are so much more available than some of the smaller companies that have already trended this way. Win or lose, you can count on me to invest plenty in anything you introduce in Steampunk! Releasing just in time for my birthday too, hmmm... :)
ReplyDeleteTattered Time is a perfect Steampunk pad, with Regent Street a close second. :)
ReplyDeleteMy husband hand carves fish that fit into the steampunk world.

ReplyDeleteI must have it! I've been slowly collecting what Steampunk scrapbook stuff I can find, and afford. I think I"m gonna need a bigger shelf.
ReplyDeleteFinally, Steampunk defined... I have heard it talked about, seen layouts defined as Steampunk, but never really understood what made it up and where it comes from. Now I know. cool.
ReplyDeleteMy family has been going steampunk for about a year now! We listen to steampunk music and discuss the books and although none of us does whole costumes, we do incorprate some steampunk themes in our crafts and clothes...keys, gears, metal etc. What total fun to have paper like this!!! Can't wait!
ReplyDeleteit's great! I've been into it for a while and have a mini on my blog
ReplyDeletehttp://madebykarla10.blogspot.com/2011/09/steampunk-pretty.html
Thanks for the lesson on steampunk. I never really knew what it was. I'm usually not on the cutting edge of trends and things have to grow on me for awhile before I tend to take them up, so I'm not really into steampunk right now -- but that doesn't mean I won't be changing my mind about it. Like I said, I'm usually a little slow when it comes to trends.
ReplyDeleteSince my style is so eclectic, I love parts and pieces of the Steam Punk style. I love that this is exciting and different. Variety is the spice of life! Thanks for the sneak peek.
ReplyDeleteThe hubby and I went to a Steam Punk exhibit at an Anaheim museum. Very cool.
ReplyDeleteHow exciting! Love it and can't wait to see the new collection!
ReplyDeleteOh Wow, Erin. I don't know much about the Steampunk world, at least I didn't think I did but I love the authors and novels you have portrayed above. I must admit that I am not a huge fan of it in my crafting - more of a sentimental vintage rather than an iron vintage I guess. I do love the clocks though and the keys and the whole thing is rather growing on me. You are such a tease! I can't wait to see this new stack. Who knows, maybe I will just go totally overboard on Steampunk when I see your new papers! It has been known to happen :)
ReplyDeleteoh i'm loving it already thanks for the sneak peek.

ReplyDeleteWhat a fun and educational blog today, Erin...thanks! I had no idea what steampunk was, and I can't wait to see the new collection coming out in July.
ReplyDeleteDO you know how many times I have said "what is steampunk"??? Thank you for answering that question! I think I finally (almost) get it!
ReplyDeleteOh! I am so excited! I went to a comic book convention (MegaCon) and people were dressed up there as Steampunk and it was so cool. They had vendors there too! I can't wait to see this collection of papers!!

I have never heard of Steampunk until your post! It looks very interesting and alot of fun textures and designs!
ReplyDeleteThanks for educating us! I have to admit I'm still on the fence about this trend - I like looking at it, but not sure if I'm ready to use it in MY work...
ReplyDeleteI've heard of Steampunk for years now. I kind of like the mixture of feminine/masculine and hard metals/soft flowers that are common themes. Not sure if I want to use it for scrapbooking yet, but DCWV stacks usually convince me!!! :-)
ReplyDeleteWow!!! This is the first I am hearing of Steampunk. I had seen this type of stuff before but didn't know that there was a name for it. Can't wait to see this stack to see if it is my style.
ReplyDeleteAmazing things. I have not yet tried using steampunk yet, but is something I am trying to branch out and try!
ReplyDeleteOh excuse me, it's hard to type through all the drool on my keyboard! This is torture, making us wait like that...Gorgeous sneak peek!
ReplyDeleteLyn
I can't wait for this. I didn't think I was really into this, but it's growing on me!!
ReplyDeleteI am SOOOOOOO stalking my local craft store!!! I love this stuff, and think creations made with this style mix are awesome! WOO HOO!
ReplyDeleteMichelle
I haven't done anything Steampunk but I'd love to- I really like the look. I actually got the Tattered Time stack with the thought of using it for something steampunkish.
ReplyDeleteTo me, Steampunk is like goth merging with H.G.Wells! Love everything about it! Thanks for the sneaky peaky and for the chance to win!
ReplyDeletesteampunk to me is metal, hot, vintage, history, mystery and art.
ReplyDeleteSteampunk is a neat look, I will have to do some research.
ReplyDeleteLoved your informational and fun blog this week. Steampunk looks like fun when it comes to putting things together. WOW! So much to learn about a new trend.
ReplyDeleteI love, love, love Steampunk and DCWV! Just haven't had enough time to create more steampunk but there are a LOT of ideas swirling around in my head!
ReplyDeleteLove love love! As always Erin you and DCWV bring us exactly what we want when we want it! Steampunk wasnt always my style but over the last year i find myself attracted and seeking this out for my papercrafting. I cant wait until July or your next post about this new stack!
ReplyDeleteI like steampunk lite. I like some of the individual components (ie, gears, clocks, etc.), but I get a bit overwhelmed by the whole thing.
ReplyDeleteSteam punk has been a slow growing trend but I think it is one that is easy for people to embrace because it appeals to a wide variety of styles. I first heard of steampunk as trend about two years ago on a cake show. The clients had already been following the style trend for some time. I guess it is when manufacturers pick up o the trend and make products that give the customer more avenues to express that trend with things like paper to bring that element into their creations. I actually just made a cut file for a card to make a steam punk inspired card to add to my blog. There really hasn't been too much on the market to add those extra embellishments. I think it is definitely a fun genre that can appeal to a wide audience. As for me, I love the vintage feel coupled with a timeless appeal for what the future holds.
ReplyDeleteI will be honest by saying I had no idea what steampunk was! I am excited though to see the paper for it....I like the idea of a vintage style!
ReplyDeleteAmy V
I think it is so great that DCWV is actually listening to its customers. I am excited for this new release that is coming in July and can't wait to see the new stacks.
ReplyDeleteOMG My favorite paper line is coming out with my favorite trend. Can life get any better..? I can die a happy woman now. I am mad crazy in love with Steampunk and DCWV. Can not wait till July?
ReplyDeleteBarb Babescraftroom.com
Even though I've never understood what Steampunk truly was based on, I've always loved the feel of it. Great designs in the sneak peak above.
ReplyDeleteErin thal you and your team for this awesome stack that will be coming in July! My twelve year old son is way ahead of me and has loved "STEAMPUNK" since he saw the movie "9". He makes lil odd toys that are reflective of all these looks and has been asking me for a journal decorated with all these looks. So in July I will be running to purchase this tack. Thank yo for sharing! GREAT JOB. DCWV!
ReplyDeleteI adore Steampunk & can't wait to see your Designs!! The Hello Kitty Steampunk shirt is too cute!!! My first sightings of Steampunk, came from the master, Tim Holtz!! Thank you so much for a chance to win!!
ReplyDeletedebpaint16@aol.com
Have never grasped the full concept of it but have been drawn to much of the style of it.
ReplyDeleteI love clocks, wings flourishes and the antique/chic look.
marg0006 at verizon dot net
Even though not many people have said anything about their actual knowledge of the origins of Steampunk, it's obvious that I am not alone in my love of the style. It's high time that DCWV jumped on this bandwagon! I know of only 2 craft supply manufacturers that have come out with Steampunk paper and/or embellies collection so I'm hoping for some really cool supplements to the papers. So excited for this release like I haven't been excited for one in ages and ages. I'll be waiting for the sneak peeks and saving my pennies in the meantime! Thanks for this tease, Erin!
ReplyDeleteanniebeescraftroom.blogspot.com

ReplyDeleteLove it!~~I've always been a HUGE fan of steampunk--it's great that it is making its way into beautiful papers! Thank you!!!
ReplyDeleteLove the vintage/futuristic vibe :)
ReplyDeletempandol1@rochester.rr.com
It seems to be a subteranian subculture of the mechanized era trying to break through to the modern world with over stylized gear and apparel.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know about Steampunk so I'm glad I read your post! Thanks for the lesson...it is super cool!!!! I love the vintage feel and the colors! Can't wait to see what you guys created at DCWV! I LOVE your stacks!!! I have tons of ideas running through my mind right now of layouts I could create with Steampunk items...the possibilities are endless! Thanks for the chance!
ReplyDeleteAlthough I never do anything Steampunk related, I do like it! I think it is quirky and neat. I love big dresses and then adding in all the other metals and gears and big clunky glasses is just cool.

Steampunk Stack would be a great add on to the Steampunk stickers I've used. Love it!
ReplyDeleteI found your take on steampunk and explanation interesting. I like to see things done in it but I haven't found it to be something I have wanted to do. Now that you have explained more about it I find that it might work well for some things for my dad, brothers, or husband.
ReplyDeleteoh how funky is that? Thanks for keeping up in the LOOP!!
ReplyDeleteIt is very exciting to see that DCWV has taken to the trend of today's scrapbooking world. Not many paper lines have steampunk other than another company which I will not mention (lol). Steampunk has been in my heart for many years without realizing what it was called. Love how the two eras collide. Uber excited! Thanks for a chance to win!!!
ReplyDeleteYippie!!!!! Jumping up and down....I love....love...DCWV paper and this will make the best projects....how exciting.....and I'm sure it will be one of ya's best sellers...I know I will be buying them......yea!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter and her friend went to a steampunk convention a few months ago, until then I hadn't heard of it. Congrats to DCWV for keeping up with the trends.
ReplyDeleteWOW super cool! I really love that camera!
ReplyDeleteWho knew!! I sure didn't, but it's intriguing. Love the old-timey look.
ReplyDeleteI'm 50/50 on this. I did hear the word way before I researched it. Interesting!
ReplyDeleteWell, it's nice to know what exactly the term steampunk actually means! LOL
ReplyDeleteThere are elements that I can see would make great pages for teens and 20 yr olds.
DCWV is always on the cutting edge and I bet the product will do well.
Thanks for the chance to win
steampunk grows on you. I love that mechanical look mixed in with distinguished.
ReplyDeletepookie
Oh, I have an online scrapping friend who is going to go nuts over this line! I am more reserved, so I will have to wait and see, but I already am liking some of what I am seeing here! Like the record album, the t-shirt, and the camera! Kinda brings me back to my teen years in the 60s----LOL!
ReplyDeleteI wish you had come out with this a few weeks ago. My writer's critique group is hosting two authors, John Claude Bemis and Stephen Messer, who both write in the steampunk genre, this Sunday at Quail Ridge Books in Raleigh, NC for a schmooze. I've been working on steampunk decorations for the event. This is awesome. I'll have to save the pictures I take to scrap with the new papers.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting, I think I'm going to like this new stack. Also I just like saying "steampunk" lol.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait! I love it so much.. I'm so excited. My daughters and I have been waiting and watching for this to finally catch up. Thank you so much!!

Informative posting ... the whole steampunk thing is growing on me!
ReplyDeletekosec@sbcglobal.net
I learned about Steampunk from my adult son, who is writing a series of novels about this genre. He has been writing for over 2 years, so that is how long ago I heard of it. I'm a bit surprised that it is still in fashion. I'm thrilled that you are jumping on the bandwagon, as I find it a very interesting and attractive look!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was reading your post, the first thing I thought of was the movie "A League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" It was all about steampunk, with the Jules Verne twist. A submarine in Victorian UK. Then characters made up of comic book heroes. It was great fun and is one of my fave movies. When I think of crafting with steampunk, I think old metal, clocks and gears. And no rules. I can add anything I'd like. Just make it look old. Looking forward to the paper stack to see what y'all's take on it is. TFS
ReplyDeleteI've only known about the element of it, seeing them used a lot in scrapping. I didn't know the orgin, very interesting! I love it, in doses, as I have seen it sometimes overused LOL the new stack looks fun!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure it's tripping my trigger! lol I do see elements of it that are intriquing. I'm reserving judgement.
ReplyDeleteI've been doing steampunk off and on with keys, gears, and metal for a while now. I don't do it all the time, but I love it. I'm glad DCWV has come out with a paper stack for steampunk!!!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see it!
Now I get it. :) The paper is really interesting.
ReplyDeleteI to just got started in Steampunk. I love it! and glad DCWV is keeping up with the trend. If you watch the movie League of Extroidanary Gentlemen (Sean Connery is in it). You will see steampunk in it. Also the old show Wild Wild West and the one with Will Smith in it shows steampunk. So it has been around just no one noticed till now. I made a steampunk flower bouquet. Stop by and check it out!
ReplyDeleteSteampunk - not my taste as we see it interpreted today. As a literary genre it is another matter as is how one defines the term. The DCWV papers do look intriguing and I could probably challenge myself to create with them especially if I were to win a stack!
ReplyDeleteI really like how steampunk works so well as a design concept for guys and boys who have an engineering head (my husband and son qualify!) All the gears and metal are so attractive to them! It's wonderful when there are products that appeal the their interests!
ReplyDeleteOh, thank you for answering the question as to what Steampunk really is!! I have seen so many examples, but never knew what it really was. I think I am going to love this new stack coming out! Impatiently waiting.....
ReplyDeleteWonderful explanation! I have seen so many "versions" and questioned if some applied or not! I already love what I see of the new stacks! Can't wait to hear what name has been assigned to it! I'm sure it's terrific! I have so many metal gear embellies that would go with it!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the explaination of Steampunk--always wondered exactly what it was!
ReplyDeleteWow. I can use those for my pics of dragoncon. Steampunk was very popular last year.
ReplyDeleteLove the whole look of steampunk. Can't wait to see the new stacks coming out. Thanks for the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteTHanks for explaining!
ReplyDeletelove this look!!
ReplyDeleteSo excited to see your new designs!
ReplyDeleteSo, so excited!! I love steampunk...can't wait to see these!!!
ReplyDeleteI love all the metals and gears and keys and such! Can't wait to see DCWV's take on it!
ReplyDeleteLove the sneak peek, can't wait to see it all.
ReplyDeleteWow this is some neat stuff. I'm really digging those keys...
ReplyDeleteI love steampunk and anythig vintage!!!
ReplyDeleteHow exciting, a steampunk stack. I can't wait to see it. I don't know much about it or where it originated but I admire the images I have seen. I don't think I could combine all the elements of fabric, metal and punk like true Steam Punkers do. Thanks for a chance to win.
ReplyDeleteSteampunk has been getting more and more popular this year in the scrapbooking/crafting world. I absolutely love it and I love creating projects based around it!! To me its victorian grunge mixed with gears and metal elements/embellies. Can't wait to hear the name and see the stack, I'm sure it's gonna be awesome! :)
ReplyDeleteJust used Stempuk butterflies for room decor! Love it.
ReplyDeleteI have heard the word but did not know what it meant exactly. So thank you for explaining it so now I know! I loved looking at all the pictures you shared, loved the costumes. Looks like it's a community like the people who dress up in comic book characters and go around the country. Very cool. I love the sneak peeks you showed, that will be another stack that will be in my collection when it comes out! I am thinking it will help with the Europe pictures I will be taking this summer!
ReplyDeleteI know nothing about the Steampunk world, thank you for enlightening me! From what I see, it looks absolutely amazing! Another stack to add to my ever-growing collection.
ReplyDeleteI have not heard of this genre as such, only noticed that movies like Sherlock Holmes embrace this kind of theme! The inspiration pictures seem interesting enough, I can't wait to see what kind of a stack DCWV has come up with!
ReplyDeleteOoh la la. Can't wait for the new steampunk line to come out. I'll be first in line. Thanks for the tease
ReplyDeleteMaureen
To be honest, I didn't know very much about Steampunk until I read your post! I've been seeing it in different collections and always love the old clocks with roman numerals showing. The Victorian influence intrigues me -- and I too love to see people having a great time! Thanks for all the information.
ReplyDeleteI love the look of steampunk and in my searches there has been very little to inspire me. Cannot wait to see what DCWV take will be! I know it will be FAB!!
ReplyDeleteI am interested to see what the new stacks will be like. :)
ReplyDeleteI think Steampunk is cool!! I've been wanting to scrape some so glad you are coming out with the stack.
ReplyDeleteThanks for defining Steampunk. I have been wondering for so long what it really was. Steampunk just seemed to appear out of no where in the paper craft world. Love how it looks but not something I will actually do myself but I do love what others do with it. It's pretty cool. Looking forward to seeing the Steampunk Matstack! I think it will be awesome and I might even use some of it.
ReplyDeletethanks for defining steampunk, I've been wondering...all I know about it is there are lots of gears usually included, LOL
ReplyDeleteI think what I see is cool, but not quite into it yet,
Can't wait to see more of stacks!
ReplyDeleteI like some of the images in Steampunk like watches, keys and cameras but am not really into it.
ReplyDeleteslrdowney at hotmail dot com
OMG... I can't believe DCWV will have a stack only of Steampunk!!!! Love it!!!
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of it before - its definitely different, I'm curious to see the whole stack though, before I can say for sure what I think of it!
ReplyDeleteI always like how beautifully grungy steampunk projects look!
ReplyDeleteLove Love Love DCWV papers are amazing. Add steampunk and DCWV now that is fantastic. I love all the distressing that goes along with steampunk. Pocket watches too. Thank you
ReplyDeleteI love the look and grunge feel with steampunk! And I am excited that DCWV is finally releasing stacks to enable my creative steampunk side! TY
ReplyDeleteBeing the mother of 3 boys and NO GIRLS I am so lookiong forward to Steampunk looks quite appealing. It seams pretty grundgy to me.
ReplyDeleteI love DCWV, but my "scrap subjects" are usually my kiddos...2 girls and a baby boy all under the age of 8....so, I would not really see myself using this stack, but definitely cool for people who would! Love that DCWV keeps up with the trends!
ReplyDeleteIt looks interesting, never heard of it til now. Not really my style but it is for others and there should be awesome paper for everyone :) i will be looking out for it to see what it's like.
ReplyDeleteStefanie
